Proof I Have More Than One Outfit
I know that most of you who see me daily on your TV screens recognize the bright orange sweater, but you may be shocked to know that in real life I rarely wear that. 
Actually I wore it a few weeks ago to my brother-in-law’s 40th birthday party because I had just come from a performance and had no time to change. Sure I felt silly, but all of the kids thought I was better than a party clown! My own nieces and nephews shied away, slightly shocked and nervous to see Aunt Rachel’s alter-ego in real life.
As proof that I have more than that one outfit here is an interview from last month when I traveled to Oklahoma to be the keynote speaker at the OKFCEC (Oklahoma Federation of the Council for Exceptional Children) Conference. I flew to Oklahoma three days after returning home from Ghana.
It was great meeting Tyler Suiters from KOCO. I had met his wife Kimberly and daughter Sloane when they came to Utah to be part of our Baby Signing Time DVD’s. I think the interview turned out great!

Has anyone ever told you that you look like Melissa Gilbert? Anyway, that means nothing, but in that interview, which was wonderful by the way, you reminded me of her… I have had so many people tell me the same thing about signing with the kids being bad for their speech development. Fortunately for me, I had a neighbor whose son was 3 and still not speaking clearly and the speech therapist told them to sign with him. 8 weeks later, he could talk just fine! It was a matter of getting the thoughts in his head out. Once he had a way to do that, the speech followed.
(By the way, one of those same people is now very excited that her grandson is learning to sign and he’s not even a year old! Hee-hee-hee!)

Ha, wow it’s weird to see you talking in “adult” mode. Refreshing actually. All I know of you “in action” is from Signing Time, which is obviously aimed at an audience of children. Good job, that was a nice, concise interview.

That is a fantastic interview! I love that Tyler Suiters is a fan and has his own Signing Time stories to tell.
That’s funny that you showed up at the birthday in your ST outfit and love the reaction from your nieces & nephews. I still think the most hilarious Signing Time Rachel story is the time you went to Lucy’s class in the outfit and *she* was excited that ‘Rachel Coleman!’ was there!

I think your idea and production of “Signing Time,” is brilliant! Definately a great parenting tool. We signed with our first daughter a little hear and there… “more,” of course. But now that we have these interactive videos to watch and enjoy… Our third child, Laik, will be able to communicate more with us! Thank you so much!
My own opinion on why they are able to speak sooner when having been signed to is… When parents are trying to teach the signs, they repeat the words and are actually talking to their babies/toddlers more than they would without signing.
It’s just Great!!!

Excellent interview. My husband often comments on your sweater. The other day while watching the credits he said he needed to look up who provided it.
My son is almost 15 months and we’ve been showing him your DVDs since he was about 9 months old. He has tons of signs and tons of words as well. Just this week he spoke his first two word sentence. He can tell me when he’s hungry or thirsty and it has all been an amazing thing to watch.
We occasionally encounter people who still don’t think there is any benefit for signing despite the proof we can show them in our son. I just have to shake my head and wonder how they can’t see it. Watching your DVDs with Grady has made me want to learn ASL myself. I’m learning along with him and I love that it is something we can do together. (Even if I wake up in the middle of the night with your songs in my head!

Dear Rachel my name is tim, i am an instructor for pathway to choices, we have been using your dvds as a way to teach sign language to our students, the program i work for is a program for mentally disabled adults but most of them look, act and respond normally as you or i, we are located in pinole CA. I can’t began to tell you how your showes have changed our whole out look on sign language and how people who can’t hear communicate.You are an positive inspieration to us all and it would mean the world to us all if when you had the time or when your in our area if you could just drop by and grace us with your presents. That would be the best thing that ever happened to our program or myself for that matter,please tell your blessed children ALEX AND LIEAH they are very lucky yo have a mother like you.I have children as well and my youngest of three has A.D.H.D. so i know how it can be but we move on and turn all what we concieder to be bad into a good thing. It’s great that you are airing on public t.v.! Kudos!! Now, is it in certain areas of the country, or all pbs broadcastings?
