A Weekend In Oregon
Oregon is BEAUTIFUL! <--------- I know that is a complete blanket statement and that it is probably not possible for ALL of Oregon to be beautiful, but so far I have no evidence to the contrary. See, I have spent the past few days in Klamath Falls, Oregon.
Lindsey did not come with me since she is busy gallivanting around somewhere in Greece. I imagine she is island hopping, eating Mediterranean food and probably looking for some tall, dark and handsome Greek man. I think she does it to taunt me, see I have never been to Greece and I have been talking about it a lot this year. I have had my eye on Mediterranean Cruises, but have not booked one. She MUST be over paid, I wonder if we can scale that back a bit… Hmmm, I will look into it.
The point is, Lindsey was not in Klamath Falls enjoying the autumn colors and the rain and the beauty, she was in Greece, which I am sure is also beautiful but in a very different, possibly warmer way. When this travel conflict first was noticed, Lindsey asked me to pick her “runner up” or shall we say understudy? Well, there are only about 8 people who work at Signing Time, (I am not kidding) and three of them are related to me, so I see enough of them.
This Klamath trip was a bit longer than usual do to the fact that there is one tiny airport with one gate with only one flight each day <——-that might not be true). I would be there 4 days <—-that IS true). I drew a name out of a hat, (no I didn’t) and that person was Jessica. Jessica is a lot like Lindsey, (not at all) in that she is single – (sort of), her “boyfriend” lives in “England” (yeah right) and I have never met him, (fishy) but whatever. So, Jessica handed over her Frequent Flyer number and I checked to see if she had a preference of sharing a bed with me or not – since Lindsey always wants to snuggle. (You know I am teasing right?) And Jessica gave up her FF digits and I booked our weekend+ in Oregon.
We arrived at one of the world’s smallest airports and were met by Lisa. Lisa is really the reason we came to Klamath Falls. One of her boys has autism and his communication and world opened up through Signing Time. Lisa was determined to get me to Klamath Falls. Most people on her committee thought she was certifiable, I mean, there are plenty of people around who can talk about sign language, why bring in this, “Rachel Coleman” chick? Lisa was undeterred. She heard “no” – “No” – “NO” – “NO!” and she still didn’t stop. Lisa just answered, “We WILL have Rachel.”
Lisa came to the airport bearing chocolate covered strawberries. Thank you very much! She and her family took us out for dinner and gave us maps with our complete trip highlighted – to our hotel – to the elementary school – to the community college. After dinner, Jessica and I set out to the Running Y Ranch, where we were staying. IF by chance you are ever in or near Klamath… stay at the Running Y! It was STUNNING!
They have an ice skating rink which Jessica and I were ALL for, except it was set to open the day after we left
The restaurant, The Ranch House was some of the best food I have had in my life, and let me tell you I care a lot about good food. It was so good we ate dinner there two nights in a row. Plus as we were eating, deer came prancing by! So, I say A+ for atmosphere.
On Halloween I performed at a Literacy Fair. I sang, signed and told stories. I even slaughtered the “Happy Birthday” songs that I wrote for Signing Time as I burst into a cappella versions per request! Ha! I think I sang something like this:
“Today you will have presents, today you’ll get a cake, today you will have something, today you’ll get a snake! Today it is your birthday, your birthday all day long. Happy, Happy Birthday and here’s your birthday song!” (Then I had to stop because I had excitedly started it in a key that was way too high and I was laughing too hard!)
And that my friends is the beauty of my live performances, not only do YOU never know what is going to happen, quite honestly, I have NO idea either. See, the cute family who requested “Happy Birthday” had come to my Salem event, driving 4+ hours to be there AND came to this event, driving 2+ hours to be there, so how could I say no?
The following day I spoke at the Klamath Falls Chapter of The Oregon Association for the Education of Young Children (OAEYC) – I have to say that Steve the sound/tech guy was GREAT. It looked like we were going to have some technical issues, but that guy, just didn’t stop until I got what I wanted. He said that he doesn’t have kids yet, but his wife is a fan, because even though they do not have kids, she has been looking into signing and plans on signing with their some-day kids. So, Steve sort of shyly asked for a picture with me (for his wife) and admitted that he hates asking people for pictures. But let me just clear the air on that one people – Don’t even worry about asking to take pictures with me. I feel like it sort of comes with the territory… most the time. It’s just when I barely roll out of bed, pull back a pony tail, throw on flip flops, cut-offs and make a quick Costco run that I am sort of like, “Uh… really? You want a picture with this?” Marcus of course says it’s my own fault and he would DIE – DIE – DIE if he even knew that sometimes I leave the house undone… I think he believes that paparazzi care about me… which they don’t. He would also be completely undone to see pictures of me taken on different days wearing the same outfit (ST! costume excluded). Marcus cares… a lot!
Ok, back to Klamath. I gave the keynote presentation. Immediately after the presentation a woman approached me and said she had driven more than 100 miles to be at the event and if it had ended right after my presentation, she felt it would have been completely worth her time, drive and money. (How cool is that?)
Jessica and I started to head back to The Running Y and I missed my turn-off toward Medford and instead kept driving toward Keno, unbeknownst to us. After quite some time we noticed this road had more houses than our road. I don’t believe in “lost” I mean, really, taking one wrong turn is not the same as being lost! And I think EVERY trip I take includes at least one or two wrong turns and Lindsey always jumps to, “We are TOTALLY lost!” And I am like, “No we are not TOTALLY lost, we are almost right on track, we are just a little off.” And then Lindsey launches into how she is going to buy a portable GPS because she hates Google Maps. Then I say she just needs to read a few more lines of the directions at once, because those directions are always TOO detailed. Then she rolls her eyes at me. Then I remind her that my iPhone has maps and GPS so why buy another GPS. And then she tells me to learn how to use my own phone for heaven’s sake! And I say, I would, except I am the one driving!
So, since Lindsey wasn’t there to start the “We are TOTALLY lost!” conversation, the drive went like this: So, Jessica and I noticed we made a wrong turn, so we started pulling over and taking pictures of things, like bald eagles that we believe were planning on carrying off unsuspecting cows…
… and Red Tailed Hawks on power poles.
Oregonians burning piles of leaves, sticks and brush in the rain…
…we even saw a gaggle of deer playing in the woods. (I KNOW it’s not a gaggle, but how cool if they were called that?)
We saw “For Sale” signs and drove down gravel roads and looked at A-frame houses and talked about how great it would be to live off the grid. Even though technically we were still ON the grid.
We turned around and righted our ONE wrong turn and decided this time to drive PAST the Running Y and see what there was to see that way. Turned out to be a brilliant idea, because we found a lake and we pulled over and jumped out of the car to take pictures of each other in the gorgeous fall colors in the rain.
The trip was great and it was nice to have a few extra days of relaxation. Usually I fly in, sleep, sing and fly out and sometimes help deliver a baby or two
The odd thing is that the very first time I went to Oregon, I went in the Fall, with my best friend Jessica. That was a good 15 years ago, but even back then, my friend Jessica and I couldn’t help but jump out of the car and take pictures of each other in the gorgeous Fall leaves.
P.S. The white tailed deer in Oregon are WAY cuter than the mule deer we have in Utah. I know because there is a gaggle of mule deer that eat the leaves off the tree in front of Lucy’s and Leah’s bedroom windows all winter, each year.

I can’t even begin to tell you how much it irks me that you were in Oregon again, but we didn’t get to see you perform!!!! Times like this that I really wish someone would finally invent Start Trek style teleportation!!
I’m glad you had a good time. And I agree with you that Oregon is beautiful. There is NOTHING like Oregon… and I hope that means that you’ll come back often!!

Loved those pictures! What a good idea to take the road less traveled. I was looking at the pictures and thinking, are these the clothes from TJ Maxx and Ross?? I guess I’m a little too materialistic, or in a shopping mood.
Hey, what about a Signing Time Foundation sponsored Mediterranean Cruise; I think our family would be interested to go!
Also, I love that you change things up with live performances – I still *try* to duplicate the way you sang the Signing Time theme song at the performance we enjoyed this past August in Norfolk, VA.
I’m with you too on the deer eating the leaves and greenery off our landscaping…I guess to them it looks like an all you can eat buffet.

I’m laughing so hard!!! Oh wow… and not reaching for tissues… for once!!! Lost? Lost? You~ getting lost while driving? Say it ain’t so Rachel~ and you know I’m totally thinking about Sarasota, right?
That was only one wrong turn too (“gee, glad we aren’t traveling going in the other direction,” says Rachel, “they are barely moving!”) But just so everyone knows, that was absolutely not our fault; it was the person who gave us the directions.
Glad you had such fun and great memories. Love the pics.

Right there with you about LOVING Oregon. I spent my vacay in Depoe Bay this past spring, and I truly didn’t want to leave. It’s stuningly beautiful…plus, they pump your gas! I plan to retire to that vicinity someday.

I feel so bad! I told you we were ordering up our finest Fall weather for your visit and then it rained. And rained. And rained some more! So I’m glad you found the beauty through the rain.
Oh, and you clearly weren’t lost. You were sightseeing! The difference? Pictures.

I grew up in Oregon — 25 years there — and, actually, the whole thing is breathtaking. (It took moving away to realize that, though.) From the coast to the valley and from the mountains to the desert, it is a pretty amazing place. Oh, and it takes a lot of rain to make it so beautiful … that’s the catch. I can’t believe I lived in the valley, just 2 hours from the beach and 2 hours from year-round skiing and never realized how good I had it till I ended up in the midwest.
Glad you enjoyed your visit! Now we just gotta get you up here to Alaska…

lotsofjoy: I could use some teleportation technology as well. Maybe next time. You do get the Signing Time newsletter right? Because we send an email out when I am performing anywhere near you. Until next time…
Anita: Wow Anita, you made me blush – “outing” my bargain shopping-ness! The secret with shopping at “TJ Ross” is mixing the cheap stuff with a few fancy things. My skirt was from TJ, my boots “Franco Sarto” but picked up on Ebay and the blue top was Ross – the earrings are “Lois Hill” – which is pretty high-end, but I picked them up at The Rack.
The Signing Time Cruise has been a 7 year conversation that has yet to happen. Who knows. Maybe it will.
Kei: Oh, of course YOU are right! Thanks for reminding me. I had to explain it all to Aaron and I imagine he got as good a laugh out of it as you just did. “Good thing we aren’t going in the OTHER direction!” – Yes, you have been NOT lost with me quite a few times, friend.
southernbookworm: Good idea to retire there. The other thing I love is the Oregon Coast, nothing like walking out of a forest of pine trees to the beach.
simply_lori: Actually I was surprised that the rain held off the first 2 days. The weather forecast had a 70% chance of rain both those days, it didn’t rain. I thought that was odd!
Thank you for distinguishing the difference between sightseeing and lost. I just need to carry my camera at all times and make Lindsey jump out for pictures in the future
Googsmom: Oh, don’t worry about it. It WAS Halloween and I imagine you had other plans. I have already heard rumors of Oregon plans in 2009.
5dunns: Alaska is on my list! I have never been there and would LOVE to.

Brilliant Blog!! Thanks, I needed a good tear-induced laugh.
My favorite parts were: “today you will have something, today you’ll get a snake! “….. “Uh… really? You want a picture with this?” …… “we are almost right on track, we are just a little off.” ( This could SO be my life’s disclaimer) …… and, ” bald eagles that we believe were planning on carrying off unsuspecting cows…” Hilarious!!!
The pictures you girls took were beautiful, especially those by the lake. Geez woman, you are very photogenic !! IMHO, your pics would be a great Book or CD front/back cover, and insert (Ah…Ahem LOL)
P.S. When Lindsey gets back from Greece, say “Yassas, Ti Kanes?
To honoma moo Rachel” (Translation: Hello, How are you? My name is Rachel)

First, we would like to say the ability to communicate with our daughter at such an early age has been an amazing blessing, to say the least. Almost indescribable really. We owe a tremendous debt of gratitude to you Rachel Coleman for making sign language so accessible to everyone. We would also like to say Thank you for singing the Birthday song for our little girl Aiyanna. When we asked her on the way to the event what song Rachel was going to sing she consistently replied “Happy Birthday Song”. So again, Thank you for indulging her request. You sang it Perfectly! I also wanted to share that after receiving a hug & kiss from you, every night at bedtime the last words she says are “Rachel Kiss Hug” and then falls fast asleep. No exaggeration. So one more time, Thank you for bringing happiness, excitement, and learning into all of our lives.
Love Aimee, Aiyanna, and Mark

So glad to hear that the two of you returned home safely. The day after you left Klamath Falls, it snowed and is still SNOWING! My wheels continue to spin deciding when to have you back. Again, they can tell me NO! all they want. You will be here in 2009. My boys miss you something bad. Every time we go bye-bye, “Rachel?” I might have to bring you back much sooner. Jaxon would not take off his Hopkins shirt for 2 days – man – did he stink! My oldest son, Nick thought that Jessica was “hot”. Her boyfriend isn’t in England … he is in Oregon. Everyone confuses Oregon with England, it’s the craziest thing. Until next time. Thank you so much, once again. You are so amazing!

Ella: “Brilliant”?? I am not so sure about that… do you read many blogs? LOL I am glad you enjoyed it. I enjoyed living it and enjoyed writing about it.
Oh boy I might just have to have Lindsey read that, rather than try to actually say it, but thanks!
Anita: Dear Anita, it takes so So SO much more than that to upset me. I was teasing… did I forget the wink? – Ah yes I did! Sorry! Here are 3 winks to make up for it
I am not easily offended and I straight out admitted in the chat that I LOVE TJ Ross and shopped there before the trip. Everything I know about clothes I learned from Marcus, except, I taught HIM to shop sale racks and discount stores. (Coming soon an entire post dedicated to Marcus!) I am happy to share my “secrets” – I love a good deal AND I cut coupons! I even shopped at ROSS in Klamath, so there!
aimee: AHH! You guys are great! I mean really you have driven how many hours total to see me? 13 or something CRAZY like that? The least I can do is ruin one of my very own songs for you and your adorable daughter!
When I came out on stage I glanced over at thought, “No way!!! They were in Salem too!” Even in the mayhem that was Salem/Denver and Nicholas’ birth, I remember walking toward the parking lot with you guys and you said you drove 4+ hours!” Hardcore ST! Fans – wait… children’s show and hardcore?? STILL! I standby it – HARDCORE!
Please stay in touch~ hopefully I will eventually perform somewhere within 30-40 minutes from you! Let everyone else drive!
lisadee: LISA! I have already had people saying that you are their hero! And REALLY anyone who lives in a place whose population is over 14,000 can NOT say there is NO way they can pull off getting me there. You, my dear, are amazing! I can’t wait to come back!
I will pass the word along to Jessica LOL – She’ll be thrilled to hear it. Oh boy, what have we started? I guess she will have to come back with me next year. (Seriously giggling!) Nick was such a good sport, coming up on stage with me.
Let me know if there is an A-Frame in your neighborhood available. southernbookworm has talked me into retiring there!

Hi Rachel, thanks again for visiting with us in Klamath Falls! I can’t tell you what I did when I found out that you were actually coming here. And you’re right! Our tiny airport is a sight to see! Please tell Jessica thank you for the gift…she should know what I’m talking about. Now that I’ve seen you live, I will drive throughout Oregon (and possibly southern Washington and northern California) to see you. You were great!

I will deliver your cryptic message to Jessica
I like that even though there is only one gate in the airport, you might get paged to meet your party there (giggle)
