Signing Time is No Longer on Public TV

Ok,

so…

Here it is…

As of October 1, 2008 Signing Time is no longer on public television anywhere in the country.

I think that statement just needed to hang out there in the world for a minute.

So did that one.

We have been flooded with phone calls and emails from you, our Signing Time Families. The stations have called us too, because many of them do not want to lose our show, they know the difference it is making for their viewers and it is a pretty darn popular show.

So, the question you all have is, “Why?”
If the fans love it and the stations love it, why would we pull it? I don’t know how to answer that without total honesty, a little squirming and dispelling some myths.

But, I believe that the truth will set you free, so here is the truth, squirming and all.

Children’s Television 101:
1. We do not get paid to be on television.

2. We are not paid to make the shows. We pay to produce these shows.

3. To maintain a fresh and successful program we need to produce new shows on a regular basis. Ideally a new season each year. That’s approximately a 1.5 million dollar commitment annually.

4. When I say “we” I mean my sister, Emilie and I.

5. We had hoped to find a corporate sponsor or foundation who understands what we are doing and believes in our mission and would partner with us. To date we have not found that partner. (Yes we have gone after grants as well)

6. A children’s show on public TV cannot advertise a product nor can we direct viewers to an internet site where our products can be purchased. As parents, that is one of the things we love about public television.

Many viewers have no idea that there are DVDs, Music CDs, flash cards, t-shirts and books available to purchase. We could not direct them to www.signingtime.com (where we sell our products) we could only send them to www.signingtimekids.com (where we do not sell our products)

7. We do sell enough Signing Time products to maintain our staff of 8 people, fulfill orders, keep the lights on, etc. We do not sell enough product to fund 13 new episodes annually.

___________________________________________________________________________________
Here’s the bottom line, for the past three years, Emilie and I gave Signing Time to viewers for free on public television. We made that choice because we felt that doing so would have an incredible impact on families across the country. We hoped it would get into homes and in front of children who needed it. We believe in communication for ALL children of ALL abilities. That is what we care about. We also believed that through this national exposure we would find a sponsor.

The truth is that there is no way for two sisters to continue pulling this off without a partnership… or by robbing a bank and sorry guys and girls I am not going to rob a bank. At this point it would be financially irresponsible for us to commit to another year and even worse to consider bank robbing, I mean how would you explain THAT to your kids?

I still believe a like-minded organization or corporation will partner with us in our efforts and that Signing Time will be back on TV. I know the difference we are making in the world and how important that difference is. You know it too or you wouldn’t be reading this.

Now what?
1. Well if you saw Signing Time on public TV, you can sit down and write a note to your station and thank them for airing us. Share with them the difference that it made in your life. See, unlike the shows in the PBS Kids Block that MUST air in a specific order at a certain time, your station was not forced to air Signing Time, it was a choice they made, to share us with you. Over 70% of the public television stations chose to air us! Not too shabby for a couple of sisters in Utah.

2. Make a request to your local libraries, early intervention programs, lending libraries, schools and other organizations to add the Signing Time Library to their offerings.

3. Purchase Signing Time products and tell others who miss seeing us on TV that EVERYTHING (Music CDs, flash cards, t-shirts, board books, of course EVERY single DVD) is available on www.signingtime.com

4. Keep telling your friends, family members and complete strangers the benefits of signing with children and how Signing Time has helped this parenting revolution.

5. As far as a sponsor, think about the people you know and the people they know. The right fit is out there. It is just a matter of finding them and them finding us. You may be the one who makes that connection. We need strong leads, not just a bunch of great ideas. If you feel that you or someone you personally know can make a difference, please have them get in touch with us.

I know there is strength in numbers. Let’s all put our thinking caps on! I can’t wait to announce that Signing Time is back and better than ever!

Thank YOU!
Honestly, the partnership we have had is a partnership with you, our Signing Time customers. Each time you purchase our products, you are letting us know that you appreciate what we are doing and that you want more.

From my family to yours, thank you for your incredible, continuing partnership!

    Rachel,

It sucks but I completely understand why the TV shows had to stop. Ideally it would be great to get a sponsor and get on commercial television where you COULD sell your products and make lots of money and retire at age 50! Ok, we can all have fantasies. I just want to say how grateful I and my family are for your Signing Time DVDs and what they’ve done to help my son communicate. Best wishes and keep the DVDs coming!!

I started a Signing Time Foundation cause on Facebook. We may not all be “rolling in” the money. But I bet all of us can contribute the cost of one DVD ($21.99). Many of us have at least one episode on DVR (see number 6) that we never “paid for.” All contributions go directly to the Signing Time Foundation.

So, join the Facebook Cause and forward it to your friends, post it to your blog and Twitter accounts, or email it the old fashioned way. Someone out there is “rolling in it” and you may know them!

This makes me sad, and I hope you’re able to get the funding you need to continue airing Signing Time, whether it’s from a corporate sponsor, a foundation or a grant. *sigh* It just floors me that something so valuable and necessary can go unfunded.

In the meantime, I’ll definitely write to our local public station and let them know how much Signing Time helped our little guy — and how much he misses the show. We do have three of the DVDs and borrow others from our library, and we’ve already encouraged our Early Intervention program to buy the set for the EI library.

I think you made the right choice! I hope a major NETWORK picks you up. Have you thought of making a commercial to sell your products?

I too will write to my libraries about this–great idea.

Everything you do is amazing, thank you.

    Also–great family picture :)

I didn’t even know you were on PBS, as we only have a couple of videos. I’ve requested the rest of what we don’t have for my daughter, who learns one to two new signs a week. She is a late talker (15 months and no verbal words), but she sure can tell us what she wants.

Even though I am sad for your TV loss, I am thrilled that you even offer the product you do. I’ve had a blog post about our love for Signing Time in draft for a while, now would be a good time to finish it up and share your situation with my readers.

Maybe we can also write to some celebrities with babies, and signing can become the new ‘it’ thing among people w/ money; to spend on something actually useful to others and their country. Whatever it takes right?! Now I just have about 15 letters to write and figure out how to get them read….

That’s too bad you weren’t able to find a sponsor. But I know you’ll find one!

I just have to tell you that you have made a big difference for me and my two little boys! We have your first 13 videos and they have saved me from all the “don’t-want-to-talk cranky moments” with my kids. I love being able to communicate with my children!

Every night we sing songs from signing time to put them to bed.

I know it’s been a rough road, but THANK YOU SO MUCH for creating signing time!!

Ok Rachel I have to admit I already do all of the above ie: telling EVERYONE I know all about ST. Did it again last night when I picked Mary up from swiming and her best buddy has a three yr old brother who is deaf and she was telling me how her mom has to carry around a book and is getting frustrated in teaching him. Her mom will be over today for a preview of ST. I tell at least 5 ppl a day about who taught my Brookster.
I’ve also been biting my lip not to say anything about why ST isn’t on tv anymore. (remember you told us already at the show ;) ) I wanted to shout it from the rooftops “Someone please help” but thought I needed to wait for you to announce it to your fans before I blabbed my big mouth..LOL. Now sence you put it out there I can blab all I want to right? Please say yes!! We need to make this happen for you! We need to make this happen for our kids!!! We need to do this for the world!!!
Your fans will come through! If we can get the word out and everyone who loves you could/would send you $5.00, you could make tunz more shows. Thats how many families love you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It breaks my heart that you guys can’t get a sponser. I tell everyone about Signing Time and how wonderful it is. I will continue to tell everyone how Signing Time is the best. I’m buying the whole set this weekend and I’m also going to push my sons school to do the same thing. I’m also going to talk to our local down syndrome group and tell them to do so also. I will also see what I can do to help get a sponser for you so that you can make my wonderful son some more dvds. Maybe even a potty training dvd.LOL My dad comes in contact with many many famous “rich” people all the time with his line of work. I don’t know if he can discuss personal stuff with them, but if so I will have him tell them your story and how your dvds are making a big differnece in childrens lives all over.

Thank you both for all you have done for our family.

I’m so sorry. I can say, though, I have no idea what a DVR is. So, I was one of those that had/ got to buy the videos. If the DVR is anything like recording free music off the internet, I think that is stealing. (unless it;’s from a free music sharing site) And, I like the case the music and movies come in. I NEED the case! I haven’t bought a lot of “Signing Time” items, because, well, we don’t have tons of expendable cash flow.
That being said, I will write a letter to channel 9 and thank them.
Thank you, also, for what you do.

Unlike the people in #7, I learned about Signing Time when a friend gave us a DVD. (We then bought all of the DVD’s and CD’s.) Until a couple months ago, I didn’t realize Signing Time was on tv! I may not have been the smartest shopper out there but I’m proud to support the great work you do. I consider all those DVD’s & CD’s an investment in my children and in futhering your awesome work.

    Rachel,

I wish I would have had this information when I did the ST giveaway on www.5minutesforspecialneeds.com.

Saturday we are going to announce the winner of that giveaway. I’ll add some of this info when we announce the winner.

I’ll touch base with Janice and Susan too and see if by chance we can add a ‘help Rachel’ post on their blog as well.

I subscribe to the whole power in numbers thing.

Signing Time has made such a difference in Parker’s life, maybe we can help with some payback.

This is SO depressing! We have already purchased all the BST shows and some of the other ST. Of course we will HAVE to work on adding to it since Cole absolutely LOVES you! (Kinda breaks a momma’s heart when another woman can console her baby better than she can…. ;) JK) He can’t actually ‘sign’ a lot yet due to his CP but he definitely shows he understands and insists on watching you. I already have my gears rolling trying to come up with something to help! We would LOVE to have you back on tv.

WOW! I had no idea that is how PBS works. That is so sad. Totally understandable as to why you had to stop. ST! was a hit and miss on PBS for us. I think it was on only once a week and the days and times were never consistent. Luckily we are able to purchase the DVD’s. You really do need to be back on TV. Maybe Noggin IS the place to be. When people hear Joey is learning Sign they ask how he learns and I proudly say Signing Time with Rachel Coleman! He is so addicted to you and I know others would be too if they only took the chance to buy the DVD’s EVEN IF their kids can hear and talk. I am ALWAYS up for watching a ST! DVD. This week for our Head Start Home Visit Joey’s teacher wanted to watch a DVD so we watched “A New Day”. She was so impressed at how wonderful it all is and many times commented on your amazing voice. It was so funny because Joey would do the sign and look at his teacher waiting for her to do it and if she didn’t he would nudge her arm to do it and then he would clap for her. You’ve made such a difference in our lives raising Joey…a non-verbal little boy with Down syndrome who has a way to communicate. I will do more to help spread the word.

I’m another one who didn’t know Signing Time was on PBS at first. I was looking on amazon for baby signing videos, and I found Signing Time that way, through all the great reviews. My first daughter was slow to speak, but quick to learn signs, so we bought all of Series 1 quickly as she could easily learn the 20 or so signs in a video within one week. (By the way, I have to say that I much prefer series 1 to series 2. :) I think it was when Series 2 started coming out that I found out ST was on PBS. I did DVR it there, but only until the DVDs were released (the picture quality was much better on the DVDs, plus we love the bonus features!). My kids lost interest in ST about six months ago, but I still bought the last couple of releases when they came out. Now we have a Deaf acquaintance staying with us, and the kids see me signing with him, and because of that, their interest is piqued once again and they’ve been pulling ST off the shelf to watch. That’s one of the great things about having the DVDs – they can see them and pick out the one they want by themselves. We really like having the ST library right in our home.

Well, anyway, I guess I’m sorry that ST isn’t on PBS anymore, but I never watched it that much on PBS, although I did notice that some shows came on PBS before you released the DVDs, so it was fun getting to see some new stuff earlier, but besides that, the PBS loss doesn’t matter much to us. Now that I know the details of the PBS arrangement (the cost, no direct revenue, and the inability to advertise), perhaps others are right that getting a sponsor shouldn’t be a priority, but maybe looking for a network like Noggin would be a better economical fit for ST.

    Hi Rachel,

I live in Canada and I am pretty sure there would be a lot of people interested in your products if they were more regularly available. Treehouse is a pretty popular children’s station in Canada – too bad it couldn’t be seen on there. I actually came across your Baby Signing Time dvds through Hooked on Baby Learn to Sign which I picked up from Chapters/Indigo book store. My daughter was born 14 weeks premature, she has some delays but she absolute loves you and Baby Signing Time. She loves watching the DVDs and has learned three signs already! I have tried looking at our libraries and stores in Canada and there is either none or minimal selection of your products. I have tried sending the message out about Signing Time through Facebook and have actually a few friends getting interested. Wee Hands has also been a program for sign languaging with kids in the States and Canada – no possibly partnership there?? I will continue to advocate your message, given I have seen first hand what has done for my daughter – building her confidence in knowing she can communicate even though she can’t speak yet!

Thanks Louise from Bowmanville, Ontario Canada

Rachel, I am a parent of a child recovering from cancer treatments for Leukemia and speech and language disorder called Hyperlexia, and he is not quite 3. He has embraced ALL sign language he has ever been exposed to, and I am proud to say that it has been exclusively through the gift of the entire first series on DVD. We asked a foundation for children with cancer to donate it to our son as something to assist in his development and recovery, and boy, did it ever! His hyperlexia means he can learn quickly and memorize easily anyway, so sign language is a piece of cake for him, but I can’t tell you how much it meant to me to discover this way of initiating his communication when his little brilliant mind was still laying dormant.

Thank you, thank you, thank you. My plan is to obtain the entire second series on DVD ASAP! It has been my plan for months, but it just has to happen soon because we are both going crazy without running up over-due fines at our local library…. We have pretty much NEVER gotten the show on TV in our area, so all the word-of-mouth from us has been to other people who would have to get the videos at the library or purchase them as well. I have given them as gifts and NOT ONE person said, “oh, my kid didn’t really get into it.” They are all addicts too!

My hopes and prayers are with such a fabulous already exisiting partnership (you and Emilie) for the cause to bring Signing Time! to as many children (and take care of your families too) as possible!

No worries. I have the 1&2 Baby DVDs and will encourage them to do the same.

I love what you do. Truly. Why and I just now finding the blog?! I am a total voyeur so now I’ll be on the lookout for your posts.

I wish I had listened to a good friend who told me about signing time early on. I did wait but soon found such a wonderful resource in signing time. My oldest son now goes to kindergarten and his teacher looks to him for help when they sign the alphabet. I was a school teacher before I had my kids and know that school libraries can order dvds (if they have a budget). I will tell all of my teaching friends to use and have these dvd’s in their schools. I look forward to new signing time dvds. I pray you get the help you need. You deserve it.

Thanks for all of your ideas and all of your love! After reading through and replying to all of you I am reminded of the bottom line – WORD OF MOUTH. SmartBabySignLanguage:
Thanks for spreading the word. Lots of people out there are “rolling in it” and even more people work for companies and organizations who have advertising dollars and who are looking for causes to align with and make a difference in the world.

    Frances17033:
Thank you! It was clear that it was time to let everyone know what was really going on and that sadly the only reason there is not another season of Signing Time on public TV is because of financial reasons. It is remarkable that we have accomplished what we have without a sponsor :) And I am proud of what we have accomplished.

    gertyp:
Making a commercial, we could do. Buying the airtime is very expensive though.

Thanks! We were thrilled to get such a great picture before all the wildflowers were gone. Plus Lucy hates cameras and photo shoots, the camera flash really bothers her. So photos are always an interesting experience. We had to deal with a 30 minute breakdown before she would let us get her out of the car for pictures. But all is well that ends well!

    familymusings:
I’m glad that your daughter is picking up so many new signs!

We will continue offering Signing Time products, don’t you worry about that.

    Googsmom:
Yes, you can spread the word. Let’s hope it makes a difference. Again, thank you for telling so many people!

    momtojesse:
I don’t believe that we can’t get a sponsor, I think we can, we just haven’t yet :)
Thanks for all of the support and for your willingness to help make a difference!

    coolwhip:
A DVR is a digital video recorder, used to record things directly from TV. It’s not illegal, but some people record shows and then burn them to discs instead of purchasing the shows they love. By doing that they are not actually financially supporting those shows.

    SallyAnn:
Thanks Sally! Can’t wait to hear when the new little one starts signing. I think BST 3 and 4 will be the all time favorite don’t you;)

    Andrew:
We’d love to hear your thoughts. You can get in touch with Lindsey at info@signingtime.com

    heather.kindt:
Tough call. People have to pay extra for cable TV. Public television is free to all. We are exploring all options though.

    simply_lori:
Thank you Lori! You are my kind of ST! fan. It is interesting how many people say ST! has been the best thing for their kids. It is an investment in their kiddo’s education and in early communication and sometimes it’s the only way a mom can get a shower… what’s that worth I ask you? How do you put a price tag on showering ;)

    Tammy and Parker:
Thanks Tammy! Strength in numbers, I agree.

    southernbookworm:
    Hmmm, another vote for Noggin.

What is interesting is that as we have talked with a number of the commercial stations, cable stations and PBS options over the past few years the programmers have felt that ST! is “too educational” for mainstream TV. They do not believe that their viewers (you guys) want a show for your kids that has so much educational content. If you look at the shows they air, even for preschoolers, you can see that they really believe you want to sacrifice educational content for entertainment. What do YOU want?

    Leanna_mom23:
Thanks Leanna! Lucy has a number of friends who are non-verbal and have a difficult time signing because of CP. When I see them I sign can to them across a room and they sure do understand and respond to what I am signing.

I can’t believe how Lucy’s fine motor skills have developed because of signing… it was so unexpected!

Just consider me your “back-up” – and be happy you have another mommy around to help out.

    kcsander:
Seems like the hardcore Signing Time families are the ones who owned DVD’s first! But, considering we’ve had DVD’s available for the past 7 years and had only been on TV for the past 3 years, that does makes sense.

That is SO cute that he was nudging his teacher, like, “Come on! Sign it!”

Can you imagine if his Head Start teacher was the one bringing Signing Time into all the homes she works in? How about Head Start was on board with ST! on a national level? Wow!

    sonjabean:
I think you are right, the long time Signing Time Families were excited to see us on TV but they were already fans. It would be interesting to have some idea of how many new families were introduced to Signing Time through our public TV exposure.

    squeeg1977:
Hmmm, we have been discussing this very issue. Hopefully VERY soon you we will have Canada details worked out. Good to know we are on the right track!

    jimartino:
Wow! What an amazing story you guys have!

Word of mouth, or as I say “Word of Mom” has been such a defining aspect of Signing Time’s growth over the past 7 years. We believe that there is no marketing tool stronger than YOU telling other people about your experience with Signing Time.

    Ctevia:
I think a lot of people were wondering if their station just took a few weeks off or if they were missing the time slot or if it had moved to a new slot. Sounds like you are going to have to retract your announcement (Sorry!) but when you do, be sure to direct them to signingtime.com

I am glad you are enjoying my blog. I just write what I feel like writing and then I think, “Oh man, can Rachel Coleman say that?” and then I just hit “Publish” and deal with it- Ha! It’s sort of a constant internal persona struggle and I never know which persona will win.

How cute is your little one? Love the shots of her watching ST!

And I do believe “You know who” is local to you. I will keep your secret if you keep all of mine ;) LOL

    luvjforce:
Like I said, “Word of Mouth” works – thank you for telling your teaching friends and asking them to get the Signing Time libraries in schools.

    clarksofclarkco:
Again, thank you for your willingness to get the word out through your blog!

    squeeg1977:
For years I could only describe Lucy’s progress to people by saying, “Lucy will do what Lucy will do, when Lucy is ready to do it.” When I was describing my concept for the song “Shine” to my dad over lunch one day – I told him about her break through, unexplainable moments, where she shines. I used the above phrase “Lucy will do…” My dad said, “That’s a great lyric Rachel!” I was caught off guard because I had never heard it as a lyric, it was just the easiest way to describe Lucy’s progress. Now at age 8, Lucy recognizes her shining moments and will, lean in excitedly and say, “Mom, I am shining aren’t I?”

    Lorren:
Please do send your libraries our way! That way your entire community has access to signing with their kids. Then your kids can sign with other kids!

Wow, I had no idea that was the reason… yikes.

Well, we can keep pumping Oprah to realize what a wonderful guest you would be… write to Noggin and let them in on it all…. and you better believe I tell ANYONE who notices or talks about how or why my two kids sign where they get support from, and I plug away… ST products, the website, the forum… everything.

I have a ST sticker on my cars, a mention on my facebook (of upcoming products and the site address), and we wear our shirts whenever we can. I look for sales and special, stock up and send ST gifts to my friends for baby showers or birthdays.
I never think about the corporate side of it all… yikes! That’s why I’m not in business.

I’ll keep my ears open and help you guys think about possible foundations/sponsorships…

Good luck with it all… and keep up the good work!!!

Greetings to Rachel and the Signing Time Community! I was sad to see that Signing Time was no longer offered on PBS, but more than that I was surprised to hear that you and the very talented people you have been working with have been essentially bearing all of the costs! There is no dollar amount I can put on how much you all have BLESSED my family! I told everybody, everywhere, anytime I could to watch the show when it came on our local station. I will personally send everyone I know to your website to purchase the DVD’s! Also, I taught at a Montessori school, and taught our 3 to 6 year old signs I learned from watching your show, and their favorite song was “Sweet Dreams” which we would sing together before nap time. By the third time we’d sing it, we’d sign it without saying the words, and several of my students would drift off to sleep in peace! Rachel, you inspired us in our work, and I can’t thank you enough! I am in the process of opening a Montessori School for children ages 18 months to 9 years of age (to start), and having a classroom specifically for Autistic Children, and see Signing Time as being an integral part of our program! My school will support your organization and company in whatever way we can! If I have to purchase a set of DVD’s for every family, I will! All of you do such wonderful, meaningful, purposeful work! God bless you!

squeeg1977: We are one of a few companies that actually logs the requests of our fans. So, yes a holiday DVD is on the request list. In the meantime, we do have a number of holiday greetings that teach pertinent signs on YouTube and we send them out in our Signing Time Newsletter.

Niamahmi: Thank you for your willingness and enthusiasm toward continued support. Please continue to tell people about Signing Time, direct them to our web-site. You are the most powerful marketing tool available to us!

Every DVD you sell should come with some cards inside to hand out to other parents. It was a mom who told me about ST & when my son was a crazed signer & ST watcher everyone asked & I proseletized madly but something to hand people — especially people in restaurants & grocery stores! — would help spread the word. My son was a crawling then walking advertisement for what you do — people still mention his past signing now when he is fully verbal. It was all due to you guys teaching me & him.

I just wanted to give another vote for NOGGIN. I’m not sure about the corporate or political side of getting a show onto a network, but we sure miss seeing you on TV! (Although completely understand.) We have a few DVDs, but always looked forward to seeing something new each week, as we have all of our DVDs memorized.

We have a 3yr old son who due to a chromosome anomoly is completely non-verbal (working on repeating vowel sounds). We had no communication until we started watching signing time. Now I know just about everything he is thinking!! The bonus is our 5 year old LOVES to watch too (says it’s his favorite show) & wants to now take ASL as his 2nd language in school.

I’m not sure if Noggin is something you want to explore, but thought if it was those of us who miss you could let Noggin know what a great show they could be getting.

Noggin.com has a parent page & at the bottom of FAQ is a place to send them an email. – www.noggin.com/parents/faq.php#contact
I already sent them my 2 cents.

Thanks for all you do! You (and your staff) are so talented and are making a huge difference for MANY families!!

When my 16 month old daughter stopped speaking (she is now 2) we found signing time on PBS- it is her favorite show! Since then we have bought 2 videos (we would/ will buy more as our budget permits) Although it is a huge bummer you will no longer be on TV, we have so much gratitude that you were on TV right when we needed you- or we may never have found you! My daughter was my first born so I had no idea about the benefits of signing with your baby. Your show is the only show my daughter will watch (we rented another signing video from the library)- it has the perfect combination of learning the signs and music (she loves music!) I also love to do the show with her- we look forward to it everyday!
My daughter is currently on a long waiting list to get a developmental evaluation from a major hospital(she has sensory issues, “lost” all of her words and other concerns- it is possible she may have Autism Spectrum Disorder but no one is really sure) .
The wait and the not knowing has been agonizing. I don’t want to label my daughter with a diagnosis, but if you do not know the cause you do not know the best treatment plan. As I mom I knew something was happening with my daughter at around 15 months- no one would listen so I have been fighting this battle in my head back and forth until my daughter’s doctor finally referred her out for further testing. This has been a big emotional strain on the family- denial, blame you name it I have gone through it- some of the things people say to you are ridiculous- sometimes I feel like I am my daughters only advocate. Watching your show I felt like we belonged- seeing all of the diverse kids with all abilities really made me feel like things were going to be OK. This show has helped me so much. Every time my daughter learns a new sign I know she is one step closer to being able to communicate with us more clearly and this will reduce her meltdowns (she has not learned how to communicate with the signs yet -only shows us she knows them when prompted- but I know she will start soon because I have been modeling them to her). I know that it sounds funny that a TV show could make this much difference but it has. Because of your show I have hope for my daughter, I just wanted to thank you Rachel for making this show available to us.
I will do my best to get the word out about your website. Blessings!

    Hi Rachel,
I just found your blog! How have I missed it for this long?? Signing Time is a wonderful program. I must admit I have every episode DVR’d, but we own a few copies…I promise! In addition, the videos are a standard gift for expecting friends! Signing has made such a difference in my son, Gus. He is 2 1/2, but could repeat EVERYTHING we said and had many signs at 15 months. Whenever anyone would ask about his extraordinary speech/signs, I would and still do tell them about Signing Time! I had no idea that YOU had to pay to get ST on PBS. Thanks for this post! It is so helpful for us to know how things really work!

PS-I am VERY close to becoming certified to teach Bradley! How fun that you guys have made natural birth a family affair! :) I will continue to visit your supa fun blog!

    Dear Rachel,
You give an amazing gift to people by producing these videos. We originally got them from our library and purchased our favorites (about 8 discs). I have shared them with my own children as well as special education students I have worked with in public school and given them as gifts. I have given your information to some friends who have a start-up company of their own selling children’s products (keepsafeco.com) and I have been posting on my blog about your DVDs since we started with them. I hope the word of mouth travels and helps keep SigningTime producing more videos. I would love to see maybe some Sing-Along videos in the future, too. Maybe familiar children’s/folk songs or Holiday songs. Keep the good work up. You have some fans for life who have never even seen you on PBS! Best of luck getting the attention (and compensation) you deserve.

I just found out this morning that Signing Time was no longer on television. That was the only thirty minutes weekly that I had the television on as long as my daughter was awake because I enjoy the program and recognize the wonderful benefits of teaching ASL to babies and children. I e-mailed my PBS station as soon as I could to ask about the absence of Signing Time and when I was told they were no longer allowed to show it, I e-mailed Signing Time. I was then directed to this blog.

As a speech-language pathologist who used to work in the public school system, I understand the benefits of sign language instruction for a variety of children and I used it with my students. I learned about your program through a friend of mine who has a daughter with speech delay. I watched the program before I even had children of my own, and even got my husband interested in watching it with me. I am now a stay-at-home mom and enjoyed that I got to share the program with my daughter who is now thirteen months of age. She has an expressive vocabulary in American Sign Language of 38 recognizable signs or approximations (and yes, I have written them all down, so I can tell babysitters, etc. what they are and they will recognize her communication attempts). She doesn’t really have the attention span to pay attention to the Signing Time program (except for the Sports episode because it had lots of balls, her favorite toys), but I was learning new signs that I could use to build her receptive vocabulary in ASL and establish the building blocks for her to use the signs later on.

I will continue to tell others about Signing Time and educate them about the benefits of using sign language with babies and children. Have you tried contacting the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA, www.asha.org) for support? I am not positive they could help, but I will try to contact them myself, too (not tonight, though, because it is too late and I need to spend some time with my husband instead of on the computer). There are also state speech, language and hearing associations that might be able to help on a state-level instead of nationally. If nothing else, these organizations could help get the word out. If I could get some of the business cards/fliers that I saw mentioned earlier in this blog, maybe I can distribute them at my state’s conference in April. I might even be able to get my SLP buddies still in the school systems to send home information…

I don’t know if you and your sister own all the rights to your show, but would it be possible for you to get on iTunes? It’s another great way to get your content out there. There are ways to also get a free podcast as a hook to get people to move up to a paid show, DVDs etc.

I’m one of those DVR folks, and I would pay for the DVDs just to get you some of your well deserved money, but 16 bucks for a single episode is unfortunately just too much. However, 1.99 an episode on iTunes is a fantastic price point and without the overhead costs of dvd production, printing, packaging, and distribution.

I’m sure a ton of people send you links to their kids signing, but my son (13-months-old) was actually cooperative for a short video today. Unfortunately, it only lasted for a few signs before he decided he absolutely had to have a cheesy poof IMMEDIATELY. Wow, wow … we just found out. We had been waiting for the new shows, Vincent even submitted a tape! While he is a hearing child, the program he has been involved in (a program for helping special needs children integrate and be prepared for life by surrounding them with “normal” kids and exceptional teachers and education) since he was 6 months old has taught sign. His teachers always thought “Racheal, Alex and Leah” were family members because he talked about you so much. We have always atributed his advanced communication skills with Now that he is 3yrs old he has moved onto a preschool where sign is not taught. The few Signing Times we had on an old DVR are now gone and was looking at purchasing some of the videos because he asks to watch it all the time. I looked on iTunes and only found the songs, no videos. So I went to your website and found this.
    Some ideas:
    • Noggin would be excellent, as many have said. We watch a bit and its alcking in the signing department although the program The Upsidedown Show has a word on most episodes(yes, only one word!)
    • Put the videos on iTunes as well, there is very few signing videos there now.
    • Maybe a partnership with someone in the communications field so there is a tie in. AT&T, Sprint, Verizon, T-Mobile, Nokia, SonyEricsson, Motorola, Apple, GoDaddy.com, RosettaStone to name a few.
    • The Riverside School for the Deaf is local here and maybe they have some ideas as well as including the videis n their library.
    • I will do everything I can through the ties I have.
Don’t give up something will come up, it always does.
Peace and hope for more shows on TV where ever they may be.

Our pediatrition wanted to put my son into speach therepy because he wasn’t talking as much as his twin sister, but after watching a few episodes of Signing Time, he bagan to repeat the words he would hear on the show. I credit Signing Time for teaching my kids the alphabet at such an early age, my kids were able to recognize the complete alphabet in sign and in writing befoer they turned 2. My kids LOVE the songs!! i can’t tell you how many times I’ve sung Leah’s farm or the colors of the rainbow. I’ve even had dreams with the songs playing in the backround!

We raved so much about Signing Time to our family and friends, that many of them have started teaching thier kids sign language.

Thank you for your honesty about why you are no longer on tv. Thank you for making such a wonderful show. The part I am not clear on is why you could not just repeatedly show the older shows on TV and make new ones to sell. Wouldn’t this be the best of both worlds, or did the networks not want to keep airing old shows… which would not make any sense since that’s what they do with many other kids shows. We would love to see you back on tv and have bought some dvd’s but can’t afford the whole collection.
